Parliamentary body slams GP for staff retrenchment

The parliamentary standing committee on labour and employment ministry on Wednesday deplored Grameenphone for the retrenchment of its employees and officials, and recommended that the company abide by the labour law and Bangladesh constitution.

The standing committee also slammed Grameenphone for ‘deceiving’ customers in the guise of different offers.

The committee recommended that the cellphone operator must provide the optimum service to its customers instead of ‘deceiving’ them in the name of various offers.

Focusing on the factor that GP earns Tk 1,800 crore annually, the standing committee suggested that the company create more employment opportunities as an institution.

The recommendations came at the 24th meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on Labour and Employment Ministry held at Sangsad Bhaban. The meeting was convened to discuss, among other issues, the unstable situation in GP following the “illegal” mass retrenchment of its officials and employees.

The ‘complainants’ and the ‘accused’, who attended the meeting, gave their respective opinions at the meeting.

The meeting was told that the GP will have to take the responsibility if any official or employee of GP turns inefficient for lack of necessary training following their recruitment through a proper process.

The meeting said creating the unstable situation through the retrenchment that violated the country’s existing labour Law and other rules and regulations is unacceptable.

The meeting was informed that the “illegal” retrenchment of GP officials and employees is contrary to Bangladesh constitution, existing labour law and human rights.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) chairman Zia Ahmed, Grameenphone CEO Tore Johnsen and acting head of the People & Organisation Touhid Abdullah, Grameenphone employees’ representatives Md Omar Faruq and Mian Md Shafiqur Rahmanby were present at the meeting.

Besides, the meeting formed a three-member sub-committee to submit a report on irregularity in selecting NGOs for risky child labour eradication project within the next 30 days.

Presided over by committee chairman Mohammad Israfil Alam, the meeting was attended by its members State Minister for Labour and Employment Munnujan Sufian, Shahiduzzaman Sarker, Abdus Sattar, Nani Gopal Mondal, Zakir Hossain and Raushan Jahan Sathi attended the meeting.
